The country's largest breast care unit officially opens today as part of the development of a dedicated cancer care centre at Cork University Hospital.
The unit is the last of eight regional cancer care centres to be opened.
The unit will see around 12,000 people every year, from which more than 500 will likely be diagnosed with breast cancer.
For the first time all those patients will be diagnosed and treated in one centre by consultants and medical teams who specialise in treating breast cancer.
There had been staunch opposition to the move to centralise breast care services from several hospitals in Cork and Kerry but medical staff now say those issues have been dealt with.
Two years ago breast cancer services were in disarray with several inquiries into delayed and missed diagnoses causing concern and fear among many women.
