200 new jobs have been announced for Letterkenny, Co Donegal, at the UnitedHealth Group.

The US health insurer is to expand its existing operation there.

UnitedHealth group, which is based in Minneapolis, is a Fortune 100 company with operations in 63 locations worldwide.

It currently employs 340 people at its Letterkenny site processing medical claims and working as IT technicians.

The 200 new jobs will be in those areas and will be filled by the end of next year.

Announcing the jobs today T¨¢naiste Mary Coughlan said strong telecom connectivity had been an important aspect in securing the investment.

She added, that the company's decision to expand in Ireland comes about 'as a direct result of the availability of highly-skilled staff in the region, the performance and tenure of existing staff and also the geographic location of the Letterkenny site - it's time zone lends itself to the 24/7 support needed for the US and Indian markets.'

US Vice-President of Operations, Jim Becker, said it was 'a proud day' for the Group.

'The Letterkenny facility stood out for us.

'Their unquestionable ability to succeed each and every day, along with their strategic location and passionate workforce made our decision very easy.'
